- 1
Assemble all the materials you will use to decorate your switch plate cover in a clean, uncluttered work space.
- 2
Measure your switch plate cover, then trace it onto a piece of card stock to create a pattern. Include the hole in the center for the light switch and the two holes for the screws while drawing the pattern. Cut your pattern out using your utility knife.
- 3
Take the materials you assembled earlier -- wallpaper scraps, clip art or wrapping paper -- and trim them down to fit your switch plate cover. Also cut out the holes for the light switch and screws. Measure your materials against your card stock pattern so they will fit onto your switch plate cover.
- 4
Lay out your materials on your card stock pattern and arrange the design you want for your your switch plate cover. If you're creating numerous layers, arrange them in the order you will glue them onto the plate first and set aside the other layers.
- 5
Wipe off your switch plate cover if there's any dirt on it. Rough it up with sandpaper.
- 6
Brush decoupage glue onto the switch plate cover and lightly press the materials you cut out in the design you arranged earlier. Allow a minimum of 15 minutes of drying time. Allow more time if you included several layers. Trim any materials that overlap your switch plate cover with a utility knife.
- 7
Once the decoupage glue has dried completely, brush on a layer of acrylic gloss finish to create a finished, glossy look.
