How to Design a Flip Flop Sandal

Flip flops have been used by civilizations such as the Romans and Egyptians and continue to be a fashion staple in modern day. They are a fun and easy fashion statement which can be altered to match your own style. By adding a few layers of embroidery, appliques, or beads you can design your own personal flip flop that reflects your unique personality.

Choose a flip flop sandal that feels comfortable and has a cloth strap over the foot. The cloth will make it easier to apply the design details you create onto the shoe. Purchase a variety of ribbons, sequins, appliques or any design elements you want for your shoe.

Sew sparkly sequins or beads to the strap using needle and thread. You can sew these items into a unique swirly design or cover the entire band to give it extra sparkle.

Apply glitter glue to the strap of the sandal and to the sides in any design you want. Flowers, leaves, suns and free-form drawing will give the shoe a vibrant punch. This is a good project to do with children.

Attach appliques to the strap of the sandal. Sewing on appliques from your favorite craft store will give your shoe a professional look and only takes a few minutes. Use a needle and thread to attach these pieces in any way you would like.

Glue good luck charms and ribbons to the straps of the flip flop. You can tell your own story using small good luck pendants and charms. Sew a layer of ribbon onto the flip-flop strap, then sew or glue the charms you would like to use over the ribbon.
