How to Enable Protocol in Registry

The successful transmission of data between two or more computers over a network is accomplished by a set of established protocols, such as in client-server environment. The Transmission Control Protocol or TCP is one of the main transport protocols that establish the connection standards for computers to communicate with one another. This protocol is disabled by default in some Windows operating systems. Users may enable this through the system's Registry. Proceed with caution when modifying parameters in the Registry Editor utility, since an error could jeopardize the system's stability.

  Click "Start," type "regedit.exe" in the "Start Search" text field and press "Enter" (for Windows Vista users). Or click "Start" > "Run," type "regedit.exe" in the "Run" dialog box and press "Enter."

  Expand "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" > "SYSTEM" > "CurrentControlSet" > "Services" > "Tcpip" > "Parameters." A list of settings displays on the right pane.

  Double click the "IPEnableRouter" setting. The "Edit DWORD Value" dialog box opens up. Type the number "1" in the "Value data" text field, then click "OK."

  Close the Registry Editor utility.
