File a claim that you are unemployed. In most states, when you are layed off or fired from a business you will be given a separation notice. Take this to the Department of Labor as proof of being unemployed. It can take two to three weeks after filing to find out if you are approved.

Once you are approved, file a claim every week that you are unemployed. This will continue your benefits. If you fail to submit a claim one week you will not receive benefits for that week. These claims can be done over the Internet or telephone. During this time will be required to look for work.

Notify the Department of Labor when you are near the end of your current unemployment benefits. A case worker will advise you if you are eligible to receive an extension. An extension can extend benefits for up to another 13 weeks. The Department of Labor may even mail you a notice to advise you whether you will receive an extension.

How to File for an Extension for Unemployment Insurance
The Department of Labor's Unemployment Insurance provides for people who become unemployed through no fault of their own and can meet eligibility requirements. Each state has different requirements. In most states the maximum length of time you can draw unemployment check is 26 weeks. After the normal unemployment insurance has run out a person can file for an extension to continue receiving benefits. Not everyone on unemployment can receive an extension.
