How to File a Police Report in the State of Colorado

Police reports help law enforcement apprehend criminals, locate stolen property and assist in criminal proceedings. A police report is the most important evidence in any complaint, as it contains specific details of a crime. Each time you call the police, the responding officer must document facts of the crime, witness statements and any observations or opinions of the officer. If you need to report a crime, contact the police. If the crime is in progress, Colorado police departments request that you dial 9-1-1 to increase the chance of the officer catching the criminal in action.

Contact the police department in the Colorado city where the crime occurred. The department may summon an officer to your home if the crime occurred in the city in which you live. If it occurred in another city, the department may request you to come to the station.

Answer the officer's questions. The officer will ask you for the type of crime that occurred, names and descriptions of the culprit, missing or damaged items, and any other relevant information. Try to recall as much information about the crime as you can while the police officer is taking down details for the police report.
