How to Find a Boat Dealer

Boat owners know a freedom that comes with being out on the water. The open sea is a relief from the crowds ashore. Boat owners are often the envy of their friends and neighbors who more than willing to go out for a ride in the waves on the weekend. Many dream of the day when they, too, can be the captain of their own ship.

      Ask someone who owns the boat type your are interested in for a dealer referral. You may be able to get a comparable deal or a discounted price if you mention you were referred by a satisfied customer.

      Visit the manufacturer's website. All dealers and brokers are listed there. Also publications like Soundings, and Power and Motor Yacht have online searches for boats for sale.

      Visit boat shows. This is a great way to make friends with other boat owners and to find out what to watch for and pitfalls to avoid when purchasing a boat.

      Check with a local boat surveyor to find out what dealers are reliable. Surveyors work for insurance companies and are called in to inspect boats for sale and certify their condition.
