  Search websites such as TheISPGuide and DSLReports for providers in your area. Make a list of the ones that are in your area. Contact each one to see if they actually offer service to your location, and find out the costs and services.

  Talk to your local utility company. Most phone and cable companies provide broadband access or will sell access from another provider.

  Compare the offered download and upload speeds for the price offered. Download speed is what is most important, but without a somewhat fast upload speed, you can't send files as quickly. A good number to shoot for is 5 to 10 Mbps of download speed and 1 to 3 Mbps of upload speed.
