How to Find the History & Origin of Names

Looking for the history and origins of names has never been easier. The Internet provides amateur and professional genealogists with vast databases of name origins. Although many name databases include a great deal of speculation, with careful research you can find a trusted database that will help you narrow the meaning and origin of any name. Whether you are researching a surname or a first name, you can find the information you're looking for easily.

Check a baby name database or baby name book. The origin of a name is often included with the selection, and this will help you find the meaning of a name and its country of origin. Generally, books are better researched than online listings, so check your local library for baby name books.

Research a name by national origin. There are often particular databases for each country. For example, Scotland, England and Greece have specific databases for name origins. These websites can also help you determine from which region in the country the name originated.

Visit your local library to locate authoritative sources for surnames. Ask a reference librarian for books on name origins. The librarian often will recommend a book on the country where the name originated. For example, with English names, the librarian may recommend The Oxford Names Companion. The librarian will also be able to point you toward special collections around the world or to a local genealogist who specializes in name origins.

Make use of an online database to gather information if you are more curious about the origin of a name or need more information for genealogical resources. These databases will allow you to connect with others who are researching the name you are researching. Genealogy.org is a database for surnames that is particularly thorough.

Search for name meanings through family artifact websites. These include family crest websites and, in the case of Scottish surnames, tartan databases.
