How to Fix Microsoft Installer

The Microsoft Installer is a program that installs, uninstalls and configures other programs to run on the Windows operating system. If the Microsoft Installer program files become corrupted, you won't be able to load new software. You also won't be able to modify, repair and remove any software either. If multiple attempts at loading a new program are met with an error message or a message, indicating that the Microsoft Installer does not exist, you can download and install the latest Microsoft Installer "Hotfix" to solve the problem.
    • 1

Click the "Microsoft Installer Hotfix" link (see Resources) to download the installer package.

    • 2

Double-click the "WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe" file to run the self-extractor. Click the "Next" button.

    • 3

Read the license agreement and choose "I Agree," then click "Next." A registry backup will occur and the "Hotfix" will be applied.

    • 4

Click the "Finish" button to restart the computer. Allow the operating system to boot up completely.

    • 5

Double-click the installation file that triggered the Microsoft Installer error to retry the installation. Follow the on-screen instruction to complete the installation. The Hotfix program fixes numerous bugs in the Microsoft Installer program that may cause a software installation to freeze. When the program installation has completed without freezing or errors, this indicates that the problem has been fixed.
