How to Get the Decimal Part of a Number

A number has several components to it when decimals are involved. The numbers to the left of the decimal are whole numbers. The decimal point itself represents the difference between an integer and the fractional components, which are located to the right of the decimal point. Follow these simple steps to isolate the decimal part of any number using your computer.
    • 1

Type in the number, including the decimal point, in Microsoft word. Now that the number is digital you can easily highlight and select different parts. Having the number in the computer also standardizes it to prevent any misreading of the digits.

    • 2

Use the mouse to click to the right of the decimal point. This is the starting point of the decimal part of the number. For example if you have the number 10.7779, clicking between the "." and the first 7 will put you at the beginning of the decimal part.

    • 3

Highlight the numbers to the right of decimal point. This will be the decimal part. In the example in step 2, you would be highlighting "7779."
