How to Get Fingernail Polish Out of a Quilt

A fingernail polish spill on quilt fabric create a crusty, rigid stain after it dries. Depending on the size of the stain, the polish can sink into the quilt right through the fabric. Leaving the stain on the quilt for a length of time can leave a permanent mark when trying to remove it from the material. Prompt removal using certain techniques and products can save the quilt from fingernail polish accidents.
    • 1

Lay the quilt with the stain facing down on top of two paper towels.

    • 2

Pour 2 tbsp. of acetone or nail polish remover containing acetone onto the reverse side of the nail polish stain. The acetone soaks through the fabric to the stain allowing it to transfer to the paper towels.

    • 3

Fold the paper towels over to expose a clean area for the nail polish to transfer, and to keep the old nail polish from creating a new stain on the quilt.

    • 4

Replace the paper towels as the old ones become saturated. Pour additional acetone on the quilt stain until it no longer lifts from the fabric.

    • 5

Turn the quilt over and gently rub 1 tsp. of liquid laundry detergent and 1 tsp. of water into any remaining stain.

    • 6

Launder the quilt with warm water and 1 tbsp. liquid laundry detergent. Tumble dry on low heat or line dry on the clothesline.
