How to Get a Free Copy of Your Tax Return

Ideally you should have a file drawer set aside for all your past tax returns and tax documentation. Those past tax forms can be very important when you need to take out a loan or mortgage, or when the IRS needs further clarification on a deduction you claimed or an income amount you reported. If you are missing copies of your past tax returns, there are ways for you to get the information you need at no cost to you.

Contact the individual or firm that prepared your taxes if you used a paid tax preparer. The tax preparer should have copies of every tax return filed on your behalf, and they should be able to provide you with those copies at no additional charge.

Log on to your tax preparation software if you prepared and filed your taxes yourself. Check the file section of the software for copies of your past returns. Each tax preparation software package uses a different file structure for storing past returns, so you may have to consult the user guide that came with the software to find where those returns are stored. The tax return documents are often stored as PDF documents, so you can also search your hard drive for documents with a .PDF extension.

Download form 4506-T from the IRS website. This form allows you to request a transcript of your tax return at no cost. Enter the name you used when you filed the return in question, as well as your current name if it is different. Also provide your Social Security number so the IRS can find your return. Sign and date the form and submit it to the address listed.
