How to Get Your NYC Criminal Record

The reasons for obtaining a copy of your criminal record can vary. Some employers require proof of a clean criminal background, you may be seeking clemency or you may be required to report your criminal background to another government agency. Regardless of the reason, if you have a criminal history, you should have a copy for your files to ensure the accuracy of searches into your past. The New York Unified Court System provides an easy procedure for obtaining a copy of your criminal record.

Complete the Criminal History Record Search Application Form. To complete this form, you must provide your date of birth, social security number, address and phone number. Be very careful to report your name and date of birth exactly, as misspellings and inconsistencies will not show up on the criminal record report. This form is available on the New York Unified Court System's website.

Provide payment. Each search will cost $65. Note that if you have previously represented yourself under a different name you should also search under that name. Each alias search will constitute a separate search for which you will have to pay the $65 fee. If you meet income guidelines, you may qualify for a fee waiver.
