How to Identify the Transmission Code on a 2006 Impala

Retrieving and identifying specific transmission trouble codes that may cause a "Check Engine" light to come on in your 2006 Impala will require the use of an inexpensive code reader or scan tool. This piece of equipment can be purchased at most auto-parts stores. The scan tool is menu driven so the average home mechanic will have no problem identifying a transmission code within a few minutes. This same tool will also retrieve engine codes and in some cases ABS codes as well.

Plug the rectangular diagnostic connector into the onboard computer test port, also called an ALDL or Diagnostic Connector, located under the driver's side of the dash. In the 2006 Impala this connector is recessed into the sound deadener panel below the dash near the steering column.

Turn the ignition key to the "Run" position and push the "Link" button on the front of the scan tool when prompted by a message on the display. Some tools are auto-linking and may not prompt you to do this.

Push the "Read" button on the front of the scan tool and wait for the stored transmission codes in the Impala's onboard computer to be displayed on the screen. Record the code number and its description for use during troubleshooting. The 2006 Impala uses OBD-II diagnostics and will store transmission codes with the engine codes.
