How to Install a Flag in a Shadow Box

A serviceman's American flag is an heirloom to be treasured by the family. According to military procedure, American flags should be placed in shadow box made by an American citizen and displayed alongside any medals the serviceman received. Shadow boxes can be made by the family or purchased from any frame store.

Folding the Flag

  With two people holding the flag, fold the it lengthwise twice, so that the flag is one quarter of the original size.

  Bring the left corner of the stripe-side of the flag to the right side to form a triangle. Continue folding triangles, working up the flag toward the stars.

  Tuck the last part of the flag into the triangle folds to hold the folds in place.

Shadow Box

  Place the flag in the triangular portion of the shadow box.

  Place the picture of the honored soldier above the flag in the small rectangular box.

• 3

  Place any medals to the left of the flag, in the order they were given.

• 4

  Place any other awards to the right of the flag, in the order they were given.
