How to Install a Honeywell Merv 10 Air Filter

Honeywell manufactures the Merv 10 replacement filter, which is designed to replace the Honeywell FC40R filter. The Merv 10 measures 20 inches long by 24 inches wide by 5 inches deep. The depth allows space for deeper filtration and air flow through the filter unit. Replacing the filter within your heating system is a part of the regular maintenance. Changing the filter will ensure proper air quality as it filters out allergens, dust and dirt. It's important to learn the proper way to install the Merv 10 replacement filter to ensure adequate air flow and filtration.

  Turn the HVAC system off by switching the appropriate circuit breaker to "off."

  Locate the grill filter in the return duct where it meets the system. You will see a small cover labeled "filter." This is where the grill filter is housed.

  Detach the two screws securing the filter cover. Slide the cover off. Depending on the make and model of your system, it may not have any screws. If that's the case, simply slide the cover off to access the filter.

  Remove the dirty filter by pulling it straight out of the filter housing. Some dirt may fall off and get on surrounding components or the floor, so be careful not to move the filter too much. Discard the filter.

  Slide the replacement Merv 10 air filter into the housing. Be sure to follow the arrows printed on the filter casing to ensure adequate airflow through the filter and system. Slide the filter cover back on. If screws were present, replace and tighten using the screwdriver. Turn the circuit breaker back on to restore power to the system.
