How to Look for Cracks in Swimming Pools

Your swimming pool provides you, your friends and your family with hours of enjoyment and relaxation each summer. However, you won't be able to enjoy your swimming pool for long if it has a crack and begins to leak water. If you suspect your swimming pool has a crack, you should take immediate steps to look for it, find it and fix the damage.
    • 1

Examine the pool's equipment carefully for cracks. This includes the filter, heater and pool pump. These pieces of equipment can crack and cause water to leak from your swimming pool. If these areas are cracked, there will likely be water buildup around them.

Fill a plastic syringe with dark food coloring if you see no sign of a leak around equipment.

    • 3

Inject a small amount of dye near areas of the swimming pool that are more likely to crack, such as around lights, returns, ladders or skimmers. Watch the dye carefully. If it rushes out, then you have found your crack.

    • 4

Go around the edges of the pool injecting the dye if you could not find the crack around likely areas. Watch closely to see if the dye is sucked out.

    • 5

Put on a dive mask and get into the pool if you could not find the crack around the top edges. You will now need to complete the dye test below the surface of the water, testing small sections at a time, to look for the crack.
