How to Make an Award Winning Children's Angel Halloween Costume

Halloween costumes focus on all types of characters, both real and fictional. One of the classic costumes for this holiday is to dress as an angel. Suitable for children, an angel outfit can be made as angelic or realistic as one chooses. The most important aspect of making a true-to-life and award-winning angel costume is to pay as much attention to small details as possible. Creating an angel costume is a fun project that can showcase creativity and artistic styling.

Have the child put on a long white nightgown. Make sure that the sleeves are long and billowy. Have the gown length go to at least to the middle of the calf. Use a piece of silver or gold cord to cinch the waist of the gown.

Use a lead pencil to make marks on the gown marking where adornments should be placed. Using a hot glue gun or fabric glue, place sequins, sparkles, ribbon or other decorations on the gown using silver and gold metallic colors. Remember to put cord or trim around the sleeves, neckline and bottom hem of the gown.

Make the angel wings. Start by holding a piece of heavy cardboard up to the back of the child. Trace wings on the cardboard and make sure that the width of each wing is wide enough to go from the center of the child's back to a few inches past their shoulder. Make the height of the wing long enough that it extends above the head while standing.

Cut out the wings and begin decorating them. Paint the cardboard solid white and allow to dry. Adorn the wings with real feathers in white. Use a variety of shapes and lengths to make the wings realistic. Use longer feathers to start the base of the wings and continue gluing smaller feathers to fill in gaps and empty spaces.

Allow the feather wings to dry completely. Attach a strap to the back of the wings to be used as a harness for wearing the wings. Put the child in white tights or nylons, the white gown and the wings. Add a homemade halo to the outfit to complete the look.
