How to Make Cushion Covers for Kitchen Chairs

Give your kitchen a shot of style and color with new cushion covers. The fabric on kitchen chair cushions is exposed to food stains daily. Washable cushion covers are a sensible solution. It is easy to make removable cushion covers. Only a small amount of fabric is required for this quick and easy project. Choose a sturdy and washable fabric, such as denim or a heavy twill.
    • 1

Trace the cushion on a large sheet of paper.

    • 2

Measure the width of the side of the cushion. Divide this measurement in half and add 5/8 inch for a seam allowance. Draw a line this distance out from the line you drew when you traced the cushion. This allows ease for the thickness of the cushion. Add an additional 1 1/2 inches on the back side of the cushion. This is to allow for a hem and overlap for the closure. This is your cushion pattern.

    • 3

Cut two pieces of fabric using the pattern. Pin the fabric pieces together, with the right sides together and all edges aligned.

    • 4

Sew the pieces together along the sides and front with a 5/8-inch seam allowance. Clip the curves or corners. Strengthen the seams with a zigzag stitch in the seam allowance.

    • 5

Finish the open edge of the cover with a zigzag or overcast stitch. Fold down a 1/2-inch hem and sew the hem in place by stitching near the edge.

    • 6

Turn the cover right-side-out and place it on the cushion. Add snaps to close the opening.
