How to Make Your Own Lumbar Support for a Chair

Correct and comfortable posture while working can improve your health, attitude and work. If you are sitting comfortably, you will tire less easily and ultimately be more productive. Correct lower and upper back support is critical to aligning the spine and making you comfortable for longer periods of time. Ergonomic chairs are designed to hold your posture correctly while being comfortable at the same time. You can make your own version of an ergonomic chair with lumbar support.

Bring the chair you wish to use to make a more sturdy lumber support in front of your desk, work area or your computer as it would normally be placed.

    • 2

Sit in the chair as you normally would and place your feet on the floor. Your feet should touch the floor without dangling and your knees should be comfortable with your thighs perpendicular to your waist.

    • 3

Adjust the chair by using the adjustment levers until you get the height that enables you to keep your feet comfortably on the ground in front of you. It cannot be emphasized enough that no matter how much back support you have, if your legs and feet are not placed correctly you will still have back problems.

Take a large soft bath towel and fold it in thirds. Then roll it up starting at one end until you reach the other end.

    • 5

Bring the towel to the chair and place it behind your lower back. Keep moving it until you are satisfied that you have support and are comfortable.

    • 6

Fasten the rolled towel onto the chair by looping a bungee cord on either end of the towel around the back of the chair and close the cord. If you feel the need to readjust just untie the cord and adjust the towel so that it fits snugly on your lower back.
