How to Treat Corrosion & Rust Removal

Rust is defined by Merriam-Webster as "the reddish brittle coating formed on iron especially when chemically attacked by moist air and composed essentially of hydrated ferric oxide." Rust and corrosion can affect any metal that is not treated. Fortunately, you can remove rust and other types of corrosion. Do it as soon as possible, before too much damage is done.
    • 1

Clean any flaking rust from the metal by scraping it with a wire brush.

    • 2

Clean the brushed metal with a rag and turpentine. The turpentine will help to stabilize the metal. You may find that it's necessary to apply two coats of turpentine before continuing.

    • 3

Mix together 2-1/2 parts each of phosphoric acid and muriatic acid with 1 part 2-Butoxyethanol.

    • 4

Apply the mixture to the metal and allow to dry. If necessary, apply a second coat.

    • 5

Apply paint or the finish of your choice to the treated metal to protect it from another bout with rust.
