Planting Artificial Flowers

Realistic-looking artificial flowers can be used outdoors as well as indoors. Although they are recognized as artificial upon close inspection, they can add color and life to an otherwise plain yard.
  • Advantages

    • Artificial flowers do not require the same maintenance as real flowers, as they do not need to be watered or fertilized. They are not restricted by local growing conditions and are resistant to foraging animals.

    Choosing Flowers

    • Select artificial flowers that are meant specifically for outdoor display. Artificial flowers that are meant for indoors tend to fade more quickly in the sunlight and are affected by the weather. Look for artificial flowers that are resistant to water and to ultraviolet light.

    Planting

    • To plant artificial flowers, drive the end of the stem into the soil. The plant should be set deeply enough that the soil holds the flower stem upright. Smooth the soil around the plant so that it looks natural.

    Options

    • A row of artificial flowers can border an entryway or the front of the house or be used as an edging around a garden. They can be massed in a raised bed, used in hanging baskets or placed in outdoor planters. Artificial flowers can be used anywhere fresh flowers would be planted.
