How to Obtain a Business License in Oregon

Business owners who wish to operate legally in the state of Oregon must register for a business license. The type of license a company needs would depend on its structure and type of the business it operates. Candidates may register online or mail an application to the Oregon Secretary of State.

      Visit the State of Oregon Business Registry website to register online (see "Resources"). New users must create an account first. Click "Sign up now" under "New Users." Enter your name, contact information, email address and password into the fields on the following page. Click "Create." The system will log you into your new account automatically.

      Click "Start Wizard" to begin the application process. The information required includes the classification for your business, the business structure, the location and information about other partners. The wizard will help you determine the appropriate license for your business.

      Pay the application fee with a credit card. The Department accepts Visa and Mastercard credit cards. The department personnel will process your application the same day it receives it or the next business day.

      Apply via mail, if this is preferable. You may complete the application form on the website and print it out (see "Resources"). Mail the form to:

      Note that it will take up to two weeks for the office to process applications submitted by mail.
