How to Put a Wireframe on in Unreal

The Unreal series of computer games, including the classic Unreal, Unreal Tournament and their sequels, come with many options for map creators and texture designers to examine their work in-game. One of these options is wireframe mode, which renders everything in the game as a transparent wire model without textures or colors. This mode allows users to see the structure of game objects even when they would normally be out of sight or hidden. Each Unreal game will display wireframe mode slightly differently. In games using the original Unreal engine, only characters and items will appear in wireframe, not the level itself.

Start an Unreal game and load a single player level. The mode and game options will not affect your ability to enter wireframe mode. The command does not operate in most multiplayer settings, as wireframe would give the user the ability to see opponents through objects and walls.

Press the "~" key to bring up the game's console. The console lists all game activity, and allows user entry.

    • 3

Type "rmode 1" without the quotation marks and press "Enter" to turn on wireframe. Press "~" again to close the console.

    • 4

Use the keyboard and mouse to control the in-game character as normal. Wireframe mode will not change any controls or mechanics, only the visuals.

Open the console again when finished and enter "rmode 5" to return to normal rendering.
