How to Recycle Laboratory Instruments

Laboratory equipment that is no longer needed does not necessarily have to be discarded, especially if there are other schools or research centers nearby that could use equipment. Be careful to ensure that all hazardous materials have been washed off of the equipment before you recycle it. Make sure all materials have been sorted properly by plastic, glass or metal to expedite the recycling process.

Separate usable but obsolete instruments like old beakers or scales that need batteries from items that must be recycled like broken test tubes. Thoroughly wash any possibly usable laboratory equipment.

Clean all surfaces with hot soapy water. Wear gloves at all times to protect your skin. Make a 10 percent bleach solution to clean surfaces that you anticipate will be used again. Rinse the item again after eight minutes to prevent the bleach from corroding the material.

Call local schools or research labs see if you can donate lab equipment that is still in usable condition. Ask them about recycling programs for laboratory equipment. Box all of the equipment being donated with generous amounts of crumpled newspaper to prevent any cracks or breaks.

Contact your local recycling plant to determine if they accept old laboratory equipment and if there are any specific rules regarding recycling laboratory instruments. Separate the laboratory instruments according to your local recycling plant's guidelines. Make sure all batteries have been removed from any electronic equipment you are recycling.
