How to Remove Olive Oil From a Bottle

Because olive oil is typically packaged in glass bottles, you can reuse or recycle them. In order to do so, however, you must thoroughly remove any remaining oil and residue from the bottle. This can be easier said than done as some olive oil bottles have narrow openings. Nevertheless, by utilizing basic household items such as dish soap, vinegar and uncooked rice, you can remove residual olive oil from a bottle with minimal difficulty.
    • 1

Pour out as much olive oil from the bottle as possible.

    • 2

Put two or three drops of dish soap into the bottom of the bottle. Fill the bottle 3/4 full with hot water.

    • 3

Scrub the inside of the bottle with the baby bottle brush. Rub the brush against the sides of the bottle to remove as much residue as possible.

    • 4

Pour the soapy water out of the bottle.

    • 5

Pour uncooked rice into the bottle until it is 1/4 full. Pour dish soap on top of the rice until the bottle is halfway full.

    • 6

Fill the bottle 3/4 full with hot water. Pour the water into the bottle slowly.

    • 7

Cover the opening of the bottle with your finger or a cork and shake the bottle. The rice will get into the crevices of the bottle and clean the areas that you could not reach with the bottle brush.

    • 8

Pour out the rice and soapy water. Thoroughly rinse the inside of the bottle with hot water.

    • 9

Fill the bottle halfway with white vinegar. Cover the top and shake to loosen any remaining soap and oil residue.

    • 10

Pour out the vinegar and rinse the bottle several times with clean water.

    • 11

Turn the bottle upside down and allow it to dry completely before using.
