How to Remove Rust From Electrical Equipment

Cleaning rust from electrical equipment can seem like a daunting task. Most commercial rust removing compounds come in liquid form. When working with electrical equipment you must be careful when introducing liquid chemicals into electrical components. It is safer for you, and your equipment, if you can remove the rust without using liquid agents.

      Turn off power to the electrical device. Turn off circuit breakers or unplug the component from the wall outlet.

      Use a piece of 1200-grit sandpaper to carefully remove the rust from the electrical component. Don't sand too hard or you may risk damaging the component.

      Clean the component with a dry cloth. Sand any areas that you may have missed. Clean the component again a dry cloth.

      Use a can of compressed air to make sure that any sanding dust is removed from inside the electrical equipment.

      Reconnect all components. Turn the power back on.
