How to Repair a Moen Cartridge Kitchen Faucet

Repairing your Moen cartridge kitchen faucet takes about a half hour for the inexperienced repairman. For the experienced handyman, this will only take about 20 minutes. If the faucet leaks, or no longer produces the correct temperature range, replacing the cartridge, which contains the valves to operate and control the water flow, is the best option. A matching Moen cartridge made for your model faucet and some basic tools are the requirements for this project.

Close the water valves under the sink.

    • 2

Pull off the plastic button on the faucet handle and unscrew the small, set screw under it with a 1/8 inch Allen wrench.

    • 3

Pull off the handle. Unscrew the dome cap which is under the handle. Remove the handle screw and handle adapter and then unscrew the handle attachment kit and remove it from the faucet.

    • 4

Take off the spout receptor, which forms the base of the faucet head and take out the small cartridge under this part. Replace it with another cartridge and then reassemble the faucet by replacing all the parts in the reverse order. Re-tighten all the securing screws on the handle kit and handle to complete the reassembly.

Turn on the water and test the faucet. If there is a leak at the base of the faucet, disassemble it again, but remove the vacuum breaker kit just below the cartridge, by pulling out the pin in the side of the kit. Replace the O ring seal under this part and reassemble the faucet, turn on the water and test again.
