How to Replace the Front Fork Shocks on a 1984 Yamaha Motorcycle

A properly functioning front fork is critical to a motorcycle's ability to respond to changing road conditions and surface irregularities. The fork itself is comprised of a pair of hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers that compress and extend as needed. In most cases, the forks used by a 1984 Yamaha motorcycle can be rebuilt after an accident or fall, but complete replacement can be an easier alternative. Although the method shown below is used specifically for a 1984 RZ350, the method (with a few slight differences) can also be used on other 1984 Yamaha models.
    • 1

Lift the motorcycle into an upright position, using its center stand or a service lift.

    • 2

Using pliers, pull the cotter pin (if any) out of the front axle. Unscrew the speedometer cable from the left side of the front fork.

    • 3

Unscrew the front axle nut and brake caliper mounting bolts with a socket wrench. Slide the brake caliper off of the front brake disc and hang it from the handlebars with a bungee cord.

    • 4

Using a rubber mallet, tap the front axle out of the front wheel and fork. Lower the wheel away from the fork.

    • 5

Unscrew the front fender bolts with a socket wrench. Pull the front fender away from the fork legs and set it aside.

    • 6

Loosen the pinch bolts on the upper and lower fork clamps with a socket wrench. Pull the fork legs out of the fork clamps, one at a time.

    • 7

Insert the right fork leg into the fork clamps. Lift the fork leg into place until the fork's top cap is level with the top of the upper fork clamp. Tighten the fork clamp's pinch bolts with a socket wrench. Install the left fork leg, using the same method.

Reinstall the front fender, wheel and brake caliper, reversing the steps you used to remove them.
