How to Replace the Idler Pulley on a 2000 Nissan Maxima

The idler pulley on the 2000 Nissan Maxima supplies tension to the serpentine belt as it stretches out from use. The idler pulley is under constant tension. Other pulleys in the serpentine pulley system are replaced when the component it connects to is replaced. The idler pulley never gets replaced. This increases the risk of idler pulley failure. If the idler fails, it usually locks up and the pulley stops spinning. This could cause excessive heat in the serpentine belt and cause the belt to snap.

Locate the serpentine pulley diagram on the radiator shroud. If it is not on the shroud, it is under the hood. The diagram shows you where the idler pulley is located. The pulley is at the bottom of the engine and has a square-receiving hole in the middle of it.

Place the 3/8-inch ratchet drive into the receiving hole and pull up on the handle. Slide the serpentine belt off the pulley. Do not remove the belt from any other pulleys.

Remove the two bolts that secure the idler pulley to the engine block.

Secure the new pulley to the engine block by bolting it in place using the old bolts, a socket and the ratchet.

Place the 3/8-inch ratchet driver into the receiving hole of the new idler pulley, pull up on the handle and slide the serpentine belt over the pulley.
