How do I Install a Moto Garmin GPS?

Some Garmin GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite navigation devices are produced for the motorcycle market. They currently consist of one nüvi model and the entire zumo series. The devices have more robust weather resistance for the motorcycle environment and include moto-specific mounts designed to grasp a bike's handlebars. Installation considerations include available power sources and safe cable routing. Installation of a moto Garmin GPS device requires following a few simple steps.

Locate a position on the handlebars close to an available power source, like a cigarette lighter plug, where routing a wire from the power source to the mount avoids hazards like the wheels. Install the U-bolt and handlebar base by placing the U-bolt around the handlebar and threading the ends through the base. Tighten the nuts, but don't over tighten them.

Attach the base plate to the GPS mount by threading the pan head screws through the washers, cradle, spacers and base plate. Tighten the nuts to secure it.

Attach the base plate to the handlebar base. Align the balls of the handlebar base and base plate with the socket arm and tighten the knob slightly. Adjust the base plate so the cradle is within viewing range. Then tighten the knob to secure the mount.

Slip the device into the bottom of the cradle and, while pressing down on the release lever, tilt the top so the GPS inserts and snaps into place.

    • 5

Plug one end of power cord into the Garmin and the other end into the bike's power source. Run the cable safely by threading it through available holding points.
