How to Replace a Subaru Oil Pan Gasket

An oil pan gasket is the seal between the oil pan and the engine block. If the oil pan gasket is damaged or worn, then the oil will leak from the oil pan and the pan will not maintain pressure. Every Subaru is different but the replacement process is basically the same for each model. You will need basic tools to replace the oil pan gasket and about an hour's time.

  Use the floor jack to raise one side of the front end of the Subaru. Lower the frame onto a jack stand to support it while you work.

  Place the drain pan under the oil pan. Using the corresponding socket and ratchet, remove the drain plug from the oil pan. Replace the plug once the oil has drained.

  Use the corresponding socket and ratchet to remove the bolts from around the edge of the oil pan. Pull the oil pan from the engine block.

  Pull the gasket off the oil pan's edge. Wet a cloth with rubbing alcohol and wipe away any adhesive left behind from the stock gasket. Place the new seal onto the edge of the oil pan and replace the pan to the bottom of the engine block.

  Replace the bolts to the oil pan and torque them to the specification for that Subaru. Remove the jack stand and lower the Subaru to the ground.
