How to Request a Name Change in Texas

Name changes are sought after by a variety of people for a number of reasons. Some simply do not like their birth names and desire a name that better suits them. Others might wish to change their name back to their maiden name after a divorce or other disagreement. Some even choose to change their name because they feel that it would suit them better when looking for a job. Whatever the reason, the courts of the state of Texas hold the power to let you change your name.

You must file a petition in the District Court of the county where you reside. The petition lets the court know what your name is, what name you wish to change it to, your reasons for changing your name, and any other personal information that the state of Texas requires. The petition must be notarized.
