How to Reuse Old Diesel Fuel

Reusing old diesel oil is possible, but not something that should be attempted by a novice. Diesel oil can only be used as a source of fuel. It should not be used for any household uses like killing weeds, the EPA warns; contaminates in the oil can seep through the soil to pollute water resources. Old diesel oil should be properly disposed of or cleaned to be reused as a fuel for transportation, as a source of power in electric generators, or to remove tar from bitumen burns on the skin.
  • Reconditioning Services

    • 1

Inspect the functioning of machinery. Clogged filters, loss of horsepower, excessive exhaust and steam in the exhaust are indications that the diesel is getting old.

    • 2

Remove water and sludge from the oil. This should only be done by a qualified service or with the proper equipment.

    • 3

Polish the oil. This should only be done by a qualified service or with the proper equipment. Reconditioned diesel oil will delay degradation of the oil for another 6 to 9 months, improve equipment performance, lower emissions and lower maintenance costs.

    Removal of Tar

    • 1

Cool the bitumen with cold water. Stop water treatment when the bitumen has hardened and cooled.

    • 2

Cover bitumen on nonblistered skin tissue with the diesel oil.

    • 3

Cover the treated bitumen with a dressing. Repeat oil and dressing applications as needed.
