How to Restore From a DIM File

A DIM file is a binary message file used to send data over the Internet. DIM files combine payloads of various types and sizes into one message; DIM files contain the payload type, length and identifier. DIM files are stored on the internal hard drive and you cannot open them manually. If you accidentally delete them from the hard drive, you may experience errors. You can restore DIM files using a data recovery program, which you can download online for free.

  Download a freeware data recovery program such as Uneraser, FileRestorePlus or Smart Recovery 4.5 (see Resources). Install and open the data recovery program on your computer.

  Select the "C:/" drive from the drive selection menu as the location you want to scan. The data recovery program will locate deleted DIM files and other files and will display deleted items as a list of thumbnails.

  Choose the DIM files you want to restore and click the "Restore" button. The command will return the DIM files to the hard drive.
