How to Seal Lock Nuts

Sealing lock nuts are fastening devices designed to remain in place when subjected to repeated vibration or other disturbances that might loosen traditional nuts. They are particularly useful in keeping out gas, liquid and debris. The most common type of lock nut contains a silicon ring at the top. The ring bites into the threads of a bolt as users tighten it, forming a more permanent grip on the bolt.
    • 1

Place the sealing lock nut on top of an exposed bolt.

    • 2

Grip the sealing lock nut between your index finger and thumb, and turn it clockwise until the nut no longer moves.

    • 3

Slip a wrench of a matching size over the nut and jiggle it back and forth until the nut sits firmly along the jaws of the wrench.

    • 4

Turn the wrench clockwise until the nut is snug against the material being fastened. Continue tugging on the wrench until the desired torque is obtained.
