How to Teach About Solar Energy Panels

Solar energy panels generate energy when light is absorbed into the semiconductor material of the panel and electric current is generated in the circuits connected to the solar panels. The use of solar power is gaining momentum as consumers strive for sustainable energy solutions. Teaching a consumer audience about benefits of solar panels can be simplified if visual examples of solar-panel use help to provide conceptual insights in addition to the traditional teaching methods.

Create a slide presentation on solar energy and solar electricity based on lecture notes such as those available from the Florida A&M-Florida State University College of Engineering. Use the presentation to explain the impact of solar radiation on the creation of photovoltaic systems such as solar panels.

Take your audience to a location powered by solar power such as the building that houses the University of Vermont's solar-panel project. Show them how the implementation of an array of solar panels can work to generate energy in different weather conditions.

Call the local utilities in your area and ask them whether solar power is used to offset any percentage of their base-load (dependable power sources that meet minimum demand) or dispatch-able (on-demand power sources that address power demand fluctuation) power sources. Have the utilities' representatives send data regarding the implementation and use of solar energy panels if solar power is currently being used by them. Present the data to your audience to make them aware of local strides being made in the use of solar power.
