How to Test DVD-R Media

DVD-Rs are used to view completed film or media projects. These discs permit users to transfer video and audio media files onto the disc to play back on DVD players. Users can test drive DVD-R media to ensure that the video and audio files have burned correctly during the burning process. If the files haven't transferred properly, then the media files will need to be transferred again.

Download a DVD player program from the Internet. Select a reputable program or website such as VLC Media Player. The DVD player program will enable the user to view the contents of the DVD-R after the burning session has finalized.

Launch the DVD player program to test drive the DVD-R. Insert the DVD-R onto the disc tray and close it.

    • 3

Select the "Drive Menu" option in the DVD player program if the DVD-R doesn't automatically load in the player. Click the DVD-R icon in the "DVD Menu" drive window to select it, then press "OK" to load it into the player. Select "Play" in the interface to begin testing the DVD-R.

Explore the contents of the DVD-R if it doesn't play, to ensure that it contains the correct media files for playback. PC users can do this by clicking "Start," then choosing "Computer." Mac users can obtain the disc information by pressing "Control" plus the DVD-R icon, then selecting "Get Info."

Reburn the disk if it continues not to play well in the DVD-R player. Problems such as audio being out of sync with video or constant freezing may have to do with the speed or file type in which the DVD-R was burned. Try burning the DVD-R media at a slower rate to ensure better sync and playback. Also select a DVD compatible file such as video object (VOB) file or Moving Picture Experts Group 4 (MPEG-4).
