How to Tighten the Belt on a Jeep Liberty

Maintaining the tension of the drive belt on your Jeep Liberty is something that ensures proper engine function. On the upper side of the engine, behind the alternator is the tension pulley, which controls the tension of the drive belt. If the belt is to loose, it will squeak and possibly come off the engine pulley, causing the engine components to fail.

Park the Jeep Liberty on level ground, turn off its ignition. Open and secure the hood. Allow the engine to completely cool before working on it.

Locate the tension pulley in the engine compartment and push it toward the rear of the engine. Lock the pliers onto the arm, located on the top of the tension pulley, and push it until the belt loosens. Pull the belt off the tension pulley.

Turn the nut in the center of the tension pulley using the Allen wrench. Turning the nut to the right will tighten it and turning it to the left will loosen it. You will need to replace the belt to the pulley each time you adjust it.
