Click "Start" and select "Control Panel." Click the "Uninstall a Program" link and scroll down to the "AVG" entry in the list of installed programs. Click the entry and select "Uninstall."

Click "Next" and "Finish" to uninstall your current AVG installation. Navigate to the AVG Free website and click "Free Version." Click on "Download."

Right-click the icon for your firewall program in the taskbar at the lower right-hand corner of the screen. Select "Exit" to close the program. Repeat the process if you have any other security software running, such as an anti-spyware tool.

Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the AVG installation file. Double-click the file and follow the installation prompts. Wait to see if you receive an error labeled "Error: MSVC Redistributables installer requires immediate restart. Installation of AVG can not continue."

Close the installation window if you receive the error and navigate to the download Web page for the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 redistributable package. Click "Download" and select "Run." Click "Next" and "Finish" to install the 32-bit version of the required C++ library.

Open the AVG installation file again and proceed through the installation prompts. Double-click the AVG desktop icon when the installation completes and click "Update Now." Wait to see if you receive a "Database is outdated" error message.

Click the "Tools" menu at the top of the AVG screen and select "Advanced Settings." Click the "Update" entry at the left-hand side of the window and select "Manage."

Click "Delete temporary update files" and select "Yes." Return to the main AVG menu and click "Update Now" to download the latest updates available.
