What Is AED Currency?

The International Organization for Standards (IOS) registers all currency codes of the world. Since the United Arab Emirates' currency is called the dirham, its IOS code is AED (Arab Emirates dirham). The code is referenced when the currency is used in international trade, commerce and banking.
  • ISO Currency Codes

    • ISO's currency codes are based on its country codes. In addition to a three-letter alphabetic currency code, there is a corresponding three-digit numeric code, which is 784 for the United Arab Emirates' dirham.

    AED Notes

    • AED currency is also represented as Dh or Dhs. Dirham notes are circulated in eight denominations: five, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000. The bills have distinguishing colors, decoration and security elements to prevent counterfeiting. They have Arabic writing and numbers on one side and English on the other.

    AED Coins

    • AED currency also comes in coins. A dirham is broken down into 100 fils, similar to how there are 100 pennies in a U.S. dollar. The coins are denominated as follows: one, five, 10, 25 and 50 fils. Vendors favor rounding up totals to the next-highest 25 fils.
