How to Troubleshoot an IBM T20 Keyboard and Mouse

The IBM ThinkPad T20 laptop computer comes with a built-in mouse and keyboard, making the computer completely portable. Users can also plug an external mouse and keyboard into the computer using either the T20's PS2 or USB ports. If you are having problems with either the computer's built-in or external mouse or keyboard, you must troubleshoot the situation first to figure out the cause of the problem. If you cannot figure out the cause or the fix requires more expertise than you have, seek help from a repair technician.

Check the green indicator lights near the T20's screen to verify that the "Num Lock" and "Caps Lock" and "Scroll Lock" settings are either on or off, depending on your preference. Turn on or off any of the settings by pressing the "Shift" key along with the setting key.

    • 2

Close all open applications, save your work and close any open documents. Restart the computer to see if the problem continues.

    • 3

Check the connection if you are using an external keyboard. Plug the external keyboard directly into the T20's PS2 or USB if you are using a hub or switch to plug the keyboard into the computer.

    • 4

Download the latest BIOS for the T20 by first using your web browser to go to Lenovo's home page. Hover the mouse's pointer over "Support" at the top of the window, then hover it over "Think-brand Products" and click "ThinkPad."

Click T20 in the list on the next page then click on the "BIOS" option in the list. Click the BIOS link for the T20 and follow the instructions on the screen to update the computer's BIOS.

Check the connection to the computer if you are using an external mouse. The mouse's adapter must be plugged in firmly to the computer's PS2 or USB ports so the adapter does not wiggle.

    • 2

Replace the mouse's batteries if you are using an external mouse. Clean the mouse as well to see if it affects the mouse's operation.

    • 3

Turn off the computer, turn if back on and press the "F1" key at the boot screen. Click "Continue," then "Access BIOS" and "Yes."

    • 4

Type your computer's password and press "Enter." Click "Config" then "Keyboard/Mouse," then click either "Automatic" or "AutoDisable."

    • 5

Press "ESC" to exit the setup. Click "OK" to save your selections.
