- 1
Collect any large debris with the pool skimmer prior to using the vacuum.
- 2
Attach the vacuum to the extender pole.
- 3
Attach one end of the hose to the vacuum. Place the other end of the hose poolside or have someone hold it for you.
- 4
Position the vacuum on the first or second step of the pool and don't allow it to go deeper in the water just yet.
- 5
Pick up the end of the hose that is laying poolside. Untangle it if necessary.
- 6
Remove the skimmer cover. The skimmer should be located poolside and usually has a white lid. Remove the basket from the skimmer.
- 7
Locate the return in your pool. Take the end of the hose that is poolside and place it over the return, holding it in place. This process removes air from the hose and fills it with water.
- 8
Listen for a bubbling noise that will emanate from the vacuum. Once the bubbling stops, take the hose away from the return as this indicates that the hose is full of water.
- 9
Hold the end of the hose in such a way that water doesn't run back out. Place the skimmer adapter on the end of the hose.
- 10
Plug the hose into the skimmer line. The adapter allows the end of the hose to fit into the plug of the skimmer line.
- 11
Pick up the extender pole that is connected to the vacuum.
- 12
Walk along the side of the pool, moving the vacuum slowly in a back-and-forth motion across the bottom of the pool. Start in the shallow end and work your way to the deep end.

How to Use a Vacuum in a Swimming Pool
Because swimming pools are exposed to a number of environmental pollutants such as pollen, leaves, dust and other items, all in-ground pools have filtration systems that usually consist of a circulation pump and filter. The filtration system along with properly applied pool chemicals can do an adequate job of keeping water clean and safe for swimmers. Vacuuming your swimming pool is an extra step to ensure your pool remains clean and clear.
