How to Verify the CDL License of Someone in Virginia

The Commonwealth of Virginia considers certain driver-related data, such as driving record, license and plate information, as privileged information. Consequently, this information is not available to just anyone who wants it. Virginia has specific laws about how and with whom driving records are shared. These laws also apply to anyone wishing to verify commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) issued by Virginia. The federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act and Virginia statues govern the release of such information. Virginia requires that the driver give written consent for access to records except under certain circumstances. The instructions on verifying a Virginia driver's CDL are divided into categories based on the person requesting the information.
  • Individual or Authorized Representative Online Request

    • 1

Navigate to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Online Services page (see Resources), and click "Record request" under Driver License Services.

    • 2

Enter the driver's customer number (commercial driver's license number) and date of birth.

    • 3

Click "Continue," and follow on-screen prompts to request a copy of the driving records. Enter the requester's PIN when asked. If a PIN has not been issued, request one online from the Virginia DMV (See Resources). Be prepared to provide personal information, including driver's name, date of birth and Social Security number.

    • 4

Pay the $8 fee via a credit or debit card to obtain the full driving record. The requester can choose to view the record online or have it mailed to the address on file with DMV.

Individual, Authorized Representative, Employer or Prospective Employer by Phone or in Person

    • 1

Locate the address or phone number of the nearest Virginia DMV office using the link in Resources.

    • 2

Contact the office by phone (888-337-4782) or in person, and request verification of the CDL. Expect to provide adequate proof of identity, via the driver's personal information, to obtain the verification.

    • 3

Pay the required $8 fee. The DMV will ensure the information matches with its records, and will then provide CDL verification in the form of an abstract.

    Insurance or Rental Car Company

    • 1

Locate the address of the nearest Virginia DMV office using the link in Resources. Requests for CDL verification by insurance or rental car companies must be made in writing under these circumstances.

    • 2

Write a request for CDL verification, including the driver's name, date of birth, CDL number and Social Security number. Also include the business requesting the information and the purposes for which is will be used.

    • 3

Mail, fax or deliver the request, along with the $8 fee, in person to the DMV office in Step 1. Once the information in the request is verified, the Virginia DMV will provide CDL verification.
