How to Winterize a Sand Filter for an Above Ground Pool

Sand filter manufacturers include winterizing instructions in the owner's manuals and user guides particular to the filter's model. If your manual is missing, note the make and model recorded on the filter and check the company's website for a manual. The basic instructions do not vary much, and require few steps. Some pool owners take extra precautions, such as storing the filter inside, or removing the top control unit, but most manufacturers do not include those steps.

  Backwash the filter until the water runs clear.

  Unplug the pump.

  Remove the hoses attached to the pool and the pump.

  Remove the filter's drain plug. These are usually located near the bottom of the tank. Store the plug or cap.

  Rotate the control valve to the appropriate setting. Some filters have a Winterize setting; others stop the valve between any two settings to keep the valve open.
