Humidor Assembly Instructions

Cigar enthusiasts realize the need for a controlled environment in which cigars can be stored. A temperature of around 70 degrees F and a relative humidity of 72 percent is optimal for storing cigars. As large areas are difficult to maintain for the right conditions, smaller humidors provide a secure and controlled environment for often expensive cigars. Assembling a humidor involves setting up the components necessary to prepare the humidor for storing cigars for the short or long term.
    • 1

Open the lid of the humidor so the interior can be easily accessed. Leave the top open for one or two days if the humidity level is at or above 70 percent to help begin the seasoning process of the Spanish cedar lining in the humidor.

    • 2

Dip a clean cloth in distilled water. Wipe down the entire interior cedar lining of the humidor but do not saturate. Place a small dish of distilled water in the center of the humidor. Position a calibrated hygrometer next to the dish of water to measure the relative humidity level. Close the lid and allow to set for two to three days.

    • 3

Open the lid of the humidor and check the humidity reading on the hygrometer. If the level is below 72 percent, wipe down the interior once again and close the led for a few mores days. If the level is high, leave the lid open and observe the level as it falls.

    • 4

Remove the dish of water and replace with a small dish of humidor beads. Soak the beads in distilled water, if necessary based on the type being used. Place the hygrometer in the humidor with the beads and close the lid for another 1 or 2 days.

    • 5

Open the lid and check that the level is remaining steady at or around 72 percent. The beads are designed to absorb or release moisture to maintain 72 percent humidity. Place cigars in the humidor based on the number that the humidor is designed to hold.
