Indiana Building-Code History

The state of Indiana has promulgated building codes for the entire state. These codes are mandatory for local jurisdictions, although cities and counties may adopt tougher measures with the approval of the appropriate state agency.
  • History

    • Beginning in 1998, the Indiana legislature and governor decided to standardize building codes in the state. To achieve this goal, a comprehensive set of building codes was enacted by the legislature and signed by the governor.

    Subsequent Enactments

    • A Plumbing Code was added In 1999. In 2008 an Electrical Code, Accessibility Code, Mechanical Code and Structural Code were added.

    Recent Enactment

    • The latest addition to Indiana's Building Codes came in 2010 with the passage of an Energy Code, which seeks to make buildings more energy-efficient.
