Information on CFDA Grants

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) publicizes information about financial and nonfinancial assistance programs made available by U.S. government departments and agencies. Agencies that use the CFDA include the Departments of Health & Human Services, Agriculture, Interior and Justice.
  • Grants

    • The U.S. government's Grants website defines a grant as financial assistance provided by a government agency to carry out an activity of public support or interest. Grants are authorized by acts of U.S. law and are not made to financially assist individuals.

    Types

    • The CFDA provides information and applications for 15 types of financial and nonfinancial assistance, including two grant categories. Formula grants are provided to state agencies and divided under formulas approved by U.S. law for ongoing area projects. Project grants pay for a specific project or purpose, including scholarships, traineeships, training programs, research and construction projects.

    Programs

    • The CFDA holds information on grants and other assistance programs available for use by state and local governments, Indian Tribal Governments, U.S. territories, private and nonprofit organizations, and public organizations. The assistance programs reported by the CFDA all provide assistance or benefit to the American public.
