Laws on Riding Mopeds in Iowa

As you operate your moped on the streets of Iowa, it is important to follow state moped driving laws.
  • Licensure

    • Provided you have a valid driver's license, you do not need an additional moped driver's license in order to drive your moped in Iowa. If you do not have a driver's license, you must obtain a moped permit. Moped permits can be issued to people 14 years of age or older.

    Driving in Traffic

    • Moped drivers must follow all traffic laws. Though mopeds may not stray outside of marked traffic lanes, it is acceptable for two mopeds to drive side-by-side in a single traffic lane. No more than one person may ride on a moped at a time.

    Safety

    • If you drive your moped on public streets, you must attach a triangle safety flag to the back of your moped. In addition, the moped's headlight must always be on when the vehicle is in operation on public streets. However, helmets are not required.
