Legality of Having to Move Your Car Every 24 Hours

Most parking rules are enforced by the local municipality or city ordinances established and enforced by city government officials and personnel. A law that requires you to move your car every 24 hours would be specific to a particular city, as there is no general legal requirement to move your car every 24 hours.
  • Parking Enforcement

    • A parking enforcement sign should be posted at the city limits to notify the general public about legal parking requirements. For instance, the City of South Pasadena, California posts signs that no on-street parking is available between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Residents are generally allowed to apply for permits to park all night long as an exception to the rule.

    City Ordinance

    • It may be common knowledge in a particular area that the city requires vehicles to be moved every 24 hours. The enforcement of this policy must be consistent and applied equally to all vehicles and against all vehicle owners; a rule that targets out-of-state drivers or visitors can be disputed in court. Unfortunately, many times the language is vague and therefore hard to dispute.

    Legal Research

    • Ignorance of the law is never sufficient to dispute a violation of a particular law. However, it is difficult to research all city ordinances that may be applicable to the use of a personal motor vehicle on public roads and highways. Government websites often list city parking ordinances by topic. Find Law for legal professionals lists many state municipal codes and county ordinances.
